Rice is one of the most popular staple foods in the world, enjoyed by millions of people every day. It is a versatile grain that pairs well with curries, vegetables, and even sweet dishes. From fluffy white rice to aromatic basmati, every variety has its own unique flavor and texture that enhances any meal.
Cooking rice may seem simple but getting it perfectly soft and fluffy requires the right technique. By washing away excess starch and using the correct water ratio, you can prepare rice that’s light, non-sticky, and delicious every time. Whether cooked on a gas stove, in a pressure cooker, or with an electric rice cooker, the process remains easy and beginner friendly.
Rice is not just tasty but also a great source of energy. It contains essential carbohydrates that help fuel the body, making it an important part of a balanced diet. You can enjoy rice with lentils, curry, vegetables, or even use it to make fried rice and biryani. This simple rice recipe below will guide you step-by-step to prepare perfect rice at home with minimal effort.
Ingredients:
- 1 cup rice (any variety – basmati, sona masoori, etc.)
-
2 cups water
-
½ teaspoon salt (optional)
-
1 teaspoon oil or butter (optional)
Instructions:
-
Rinse the Rice:
Put the rice in a bowl and wash it 2–3 times with clean water.
This removes extra starch and makes the rice fluffy. -
Soak (Optional):
Soak the rice in water for 15–20 minutes if you want softer rice.
Drain the water before cooking. -
Boil Water:
In a pot, add 2 cups of water for every 1 cup of rice.
Add salt and oil (optional) and bring it to a boil. -
Add Rice:
Once the water starts boiling, add the rinsed rice.
Stir gently so the grains don’t stick together. -
Cook:
Cover the pot with a lid and reduce the flame to low heat.
Let it cook for 10–15 minutes until the water is completely absorbed. -
Rest:
Turn off the stove and let the rice rest (covered) for 5 minutes.
This helps the rice become fluffy. -
Fluff and Serve:
Use a fork to gently fluff the rice.
Serve hot with curry, dal, or any dish you like.
Tips:
-
For firmer rice: use 1½ cups water per cup of rice
-
For softer rice: use 2 to 2¼ cups water per cup of rice
-
You can also cook it in a pressure cooker — 1 cup rice + 2 cups water, cook for 2 whistles.
